Qstream’s AI Author Assistant allows content authors to create effective microlearning questions faster than ever before.
Discover the tool's exciting features as well as a tutorial on how to use it in our in-depth video below:
Using the AI Author Assistant
Qstream’s AI Author Assistant is available to all clients. The feature is on as default, unless otherwise requested, and it can be toggled on and off in the “Admin” section of the platform.
If you are having trouble with the setting, please reach out to your Qstream representative and they’ll be happy to assist
To start creating your questions, navigate to the "Library" tab at the top. Under the "Questions" section, click "New Question" and then select "Create with Qstream AI" from the dropdown menu:
You can also access the feature via the "Decks" section (also within the library tab) by selecting "New Deck" and then clicking "Create with Qstream AI" from the dropdown menu:
Basic Settings:
From the Basic Settings tab you can enter a prompt for the AI to use when drafting your material. Source Material can also be uploaded (which will be discussed later in this article).
Qstream AI supports all question types, with the style varying based on your selection. For example, choosing 'Classic' question options include 'Knowledge Check,' 'True or False,' or 'Scenario.' Meanwhile, selecting 'Fill in the Blank' gives options such as 'Arrange the Correct Order,' 'Match the Values,' or 'Complete the Statement.'
When creating multiple questions, we recommend increasing the total by 10% to give yourself a variety to choose from, in case you want to remove some.
Keep in mind that creating a large number of questions may take longer, and the maximum you can create at once is 50.
Advanced Settings:
Users can add context and controls before creating content. This ensures content is more relevant to the audience and organisational goals, reducing the need for edits.
The advanced fields are:
- Audience: Define who the learning is for.
- Skill level: Set the learners' current or required knowledge level.
- Language: Choose from available platform languages or enter a custom one.
- Learning outcomes and goals: Specify what learners should know and demonstrate.
- Behavioural outcomes: Describe observable learner actions linked to learning.
Question types/styles allow you to select preferred formats for multi-question generation.
The items in this tab are optional for content creation, but using them is recommended to make the content more relevant and engaging for your learners.
Source Material:
Users can also upload existing training documents instead of typing or copying content, making content drafting even easier.
Simply drop your file or manually upload it from your device.
Reviewing Drafted AI Author Content:
Once you have finished with the Basic Settings, Advanced Settings, and Source Material, click “Create” and you will be taken to your drafted content. Any questions created with AI will be marked as such and decks will have "[AI]" in the title.
Single Questions:
If you create a single question, you will be taken to the question in “Edit” mode. Here you can edit your content as you wish, by adjusting the text, and adding images or video.
It is important to note that the question will not be saved until you select “Save” at the bottom of the screen.
If the question is not to your liking, or you wish to adjust your settings or other controls, you can select “Recreate” from the top of the page.
Multi-Question Decks:
If you create 2 or more questions at once, these will be grouped into a deck. You will be taken to the Deck “Details” screen once the AI has finished drafting the questions.
Here, you can view the topics linked to each question, the author who created them, and the dates and timestamps of their creation or updates:
By selecting "Questions", you can review, edit, or delete questions as needed. You can also add additional questions from the library to your deck:
The AI Author Assistant creates a quality “first draft” using our microlearning best practices, but we highly encourage content creators to review and edit the content to meet their needs, adding visuals and exercising creativity to engage learners in exciting ways.
Additional Information:
AI Author Assistant Best Practices:
- To ensure that the resulting learning experience is one that will make sense to the learner, try keeping to a similar theme or topic with your uploaded documents.
- If you upload materials that focus on a variety of different subjects, the resulting content will be less cohesive.
- Condense uploaded source material into the “most important” (quality over quantity) so that the AI Author Assistant will focus on the most critical information.
- The content drafted by the AI is reflective as much of the uploaded content as possible, though it may not be in perfectly “equal” amounts.
- If you upload multiple documents but only creates one question, it is highly likely that the question will only reflect one document.
- When creating a large number of questions, ensure that there is enough content for the AI to use as source material.
- If a large number of questions is requested but minimal content is provided, the quality of some of the resulting questions may not meet the user’s expectations.
- The upload function is designed to break text into engaging microlearning challenges, meaning that the more text and context provided, the richer the results .
Document Upload Parameters:
There is a limit to how much content can be included in each AI Author interaction:
- File size: 30MB per file
- Number of tokens: 108,000 tokens total
- Number of files: 5 files total
Note: Tokens represent the amount of text that the AI can process in a single interaction. We have to limit the number of tokens allowed as we are limited by our AI provider, OpenAI. While size and number of tokens do often correlate, it is not an exact one-to-one comparison.
Currently, only PDF files are supported for document upload. Additional file format options will be added in Summer 2025.
